Public Participation

Members of the public and District employees may present comments, suggestions, or concerns at each regular and special open public meeting of the Board.

There are two opportunities for public participation. The first opportunity during the first half of the meeting is for comments pertaining to specific agenda items under consideration that evening. The second opportunity for public comments is at the end of the meeting. At that time, comments not pertaining to specific agenda items can be made.

In order to participate in the public comment portion of the meeting, we ask that you fill out the Recognition of Registered Visitors Form either online or in person the night of the meeting (A PDF version can also be downloaded and printed). If you are filling out the printed form please hand it to the Director of Communications before the start of the meeting. During public comment, the Board President will call on registered visitors to address the Board. Each registered visitor is given 5 minutes to speak. Please be respectful if you are asked to wrap up at the end of your five-minute period. We limit speaking time so the Board can hear from as many registered visitors as possible.

Below are some tips for addressing the Board:

  • Introduce yourself to the Board.
  • Be mindful of the time limit for public comment and be brief. Longer statements should be put in writing and provided to the board with your Registered Visitor Form.
  • Be respectful and civil at all times.

We ask that all meeting attendees conduct themselves professionally when attending and/or participating in a public meeting. Critical comments about specific individuals, profanity, interruption, or interference with the orderly conduct of a board meeting is prohibited.

Please note that the Board of Education discourages public comments regarding specific individuals, including employees and students either by name or by description that could reasonably identify a student. The Board asks speakers to consider how their comments may compromise a student’s privacy or sense of safety.

If you are attending to ask a specific question, please put your question in writing on the space indicated on the Recognition of Registered Visitors Form. The Board does not engage in discussion during public comment. Specific questions delivered during public comments will be referred to the Superintendent and responses to public comments will be provided in writing and posted on the district website within 24 hours.
