The Student Services Department identifies and provides supports to students with unique individual learning needs in an environment which is least restrictive and promotes interaction with peers to enhance learning and self-esteem.
For our youngest learners ages 3-5 in the District, we hold multiple preschool screenings throughout the year to assess a child’s general development and identify any delays in vision, hearing, motor, cognitive, social-emotional and/or speech and language development. Children identified through the screening as being at-risk for learning and/or social-emotional difficulties may be referred for the District’s At-Risk Preschool program and/or a special education evaluation.
Student Services Department works closely with the Curriculum and Instruction Department to implement the District’s Response to Intervention (RtI) Program providing reading, math and/or social-emotional interventions to identified students and monitoring the progress of the students engaged in these interventions. Through the RtI process, Student Services Staff then identifies students in grades Pre-K through 8th that may qualify for special education services through an Individualized Education Plan or accommodations through 504 Plan if their disability adversely impacts their educational performance.
A continuum of instructional programs and services are available to eligible students who have a disability that impacts their ability to benefit from standard educational programming. Special education services are offered directly through the district or in conjunction with the Southwest Cook County Cooperative for Special Education.
